Co-founder wanted

I want to start my own software company whenever I finish at Kiha, whether it succeeds and I'm rich, fails and I'm laid off, or just gets big and I get bored.*

Specifically, I want to work on a very small and focused project with one or two partners, fund myself for 3–4 months, launch a product by the end of that period, then decide whether to put in more time/money, seek outside funding, or what. Anyone want to join me—not this week or this month, but maybe this year or next? Let's talk. See my profile for contact info, or add a comment below.

*Don't worry, [info]bellwethr, I'm not suggesting anything is imminent! I'm very happy at Kiha. This is a longer-term dream, but I figure it needs some advance planning if I want it to be real someday.

That sounds exactly like what my husband is planning to do in roughly the same time period. He'd be interested. I guess I should double check with him...

Yes, he's definitely interested.

If it's InfoVis, maybe. :)

Heh. I don't yet have any visualization-related business ideas, but if you know any good problems we could make money by solving, I'd be happy to work on them with you.

:) I'm not worried. I'd like to do something similar myself as well.

You can add me to the interested list.

That does sound like fun. Were you planning to do it in seattle? Have you read Paul Graham's essays about startups?

I'll be in Seattle, and working from home if I do the bootstrapping thing as planned. (One reason I want to start a business is to be able to work from home full-time.) Co-founders in Seattle would be easier to meet up with, and I have a home office where we could work side-by-side. But it's fairly likely that we'd be working remotely most of the time anyways, so location is not necessarily an obstacle.

Yeah, I've read all of Paul Graham's stuff. I also read Hacker News semi-regularly.

Add me as curious.

I definitely would like to do something of the sort at some point, although things are quite fluxy right now.

Hard to think of anyone I'd rather do such a thing with, but alas, I've realized that doing a startup isn't the life for me. But I'll be watching with bated breath!

I'm certainly curious - though don't necessarily have relevant skills. Interest would depend heavily on the particular project (I have one I've been thinking about for a while).

I've got a few ideas of my own, but I'm trying not to choose a specific project too early since I think it should depend on the people (and will probably change dramatically as we go, anyway). If you've already got an idea you're excited about, awesome. You can email me if you feel like sharing it...

My main criteria are: (a) it should be possible to build a minimal first version in a few months, and (b) it should be something that we ourselves will use and, ideally, would be willing to pay for.

I think your (b) is absolutely critical. I think everyone involved in a start-up should be using the 'whatever-it-is' constantly, regardless of the role in the company.

I'm sure Peter will be interested, but he only reads LJ sporadically. I'll point him to this post. Or, if you have some ideas ready to bounce around, he'll respond quickly to e-mail.

(I'm interested too, but I need to focus on graduating until ~2011)

I've had a similar thought for a while, although possibly on a later time scale than you're thinking. Definitely count me as interested, though.
